Here is April and May having a nice little romp, at least they cant get into the fruit trees they are running beside. I ran out of room in the other gardens so I also have our sweet potatoes and beans planted here.
Now Bella on the other hand took time from running and playing to push at the gate a little, I keep it wired shut so she did not get in. With regards to cow's no one can tell me they are not smart, they are very smart!
If they would just stay in this area of the yard (it always seems to get away from me) I would be happy and it would save me bush-hogging it. :) This area I leave for last so it ends up getting to tall for the lawn mower, it has a few rocks in it (to deep in the ground and huge to get out by hand) so I tend to avoid this area and mow it every other time I mow the rest of the yard that's why it usually ends up being bush-hogged.....
Of course they will not stay in that area, this is big red she does not look to big in this picture but she is tall and about 1400 pounds. Oh and I need to thank Sharon over at Meadow House Musings, she liked the name Reba for Big Reds baby and I like it also so Reba it is. :)
I opened the lower gate and put some feed just below it and waited for them to find it. I usually walk around the cows (they are very calm) but a couple of the cows are in and I don't trust the bull very much at the present time. At least they ate a little of the lower area before they went out, but I am also missing a few bushes and have cow poo to clean up.....

I agree that cows are very smart. I used to have a cow that would get out of the fence, eat all the pears on the tree in my yard, and get back in the fence. I never did see it go in or out and I have no idea how it did it. Very sneaky. Thank goodness for garden fences.
ReplyDeleteThant a cute story! Yes thank goodness for garden fences! :)
DeleteI remember one cold, nasty, rainy Feb., when Dad, Mom and I tried to get the heifers across the road to the barn. The winter had been very mild until then, but, a storm was brewing, and, Dad wanted them warm and dry. Two were being buggers about it, must've chased them for hours, soaked to the skin, I fell in the mud and mom laughed so hard, she almost peed. The remaining one, kept going thru the fence to the neighbors. We finally gave up when dad said, "Let her stay out, she'll be ready to come in tomorrow" and she was. My grandfather was in the house with a pot of mom's homemade veggie soup, which I never liked, I ate two bowls.
ReplyDeleteGive little Reba a hug for me, if Big Red lets you get near her.
It seems like they always act up when the weather is going to get bad and they can become very stubborn! Big Red will let me pet her but will not let me get near Reba she is a very protective mommy. Oh and I loove veggie soup I bet it was delish after a time like that! :)
DeleteLOL, I finally convinced DH that if he didn't get rid of a steer that was fence jumping it would end up as dog meat as I was going to borrow the neighbours gun and shoot it! It was easily clearing a 4 strand barb wire fence (about 4 feet high) and jumping into the house yard at night, eating the low oranges off the trees then jumping out as it wasn't there in the morning. I wondered how it was coming in until my working dog alerted me early one day, as the steer had strayed into her line of site, so I let her drive it towards the gate I opened and it just popped over the nearby fence like an olympic showjumper. All I can say now is it sold for a good price at the monthly cattle market :D.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Brahman cattle may be intelligent but sometimes they are too clever for their own good.
Jumping a four strand fence is a lot, I would have gotten rid of him also! We had a cow a few years ago that kept getting out into the neighbors field, could not find a fence down and she was to big to jump. After three times getting out I finally decided to run her toward the fence and (hope)she would go back the way she came. Well she did but it was a suprise to me, she walked across our cattle guard so I ended up selling her also. :)
DeleteI have the same problem but with horses. We have one pony here that I swear can limbo. I love how you take the words right out of my mouth. turn your head for a second and.....
ReplyDeleteI built a huge fence around my garden this year and if they get in Im leaving.
