Shirley and her brush with death

Just when you think everything is fine and your looking forward to getting ready to turn in and read a good book after checking first on the animals.....never make plans on a farm, it'll bite you a lot of the time!
This is our sweet Shirley dried off, but still shaking. When checking and feeding everyone again before bed, Shirley was not to be found. After a few minutes of hubby and I frantically searching, she was found (in the water tank) up to her neck in cold water, the temp last night was in the 20's. I do have a tank heater, but the water was still very cold she was just making a tiny noise but still standing. When hubby pulled her out and we ran her to the house, she was so cold she could no longer stand. She could not be warmed up to fast so we took her to the coolest room of the house and hubby started rubbing her down while I blow dried her hair on a low setting.
This is her after about an half hour, she is now dry but she is still grinding her teeth and shaking, but both have gotten a little better. Sorry the pictures are so dark, I turned the lights down low trying to keep her calm.
This is her after almost 2 hours she can stand now and move around slowly,  her shaking has stopped and she is no longer grinding her teeth. She is going to spend the night in the house (utility room, with blankets on the floor) so I can keep checking on her, now I am just worried about phenomena setting in.
I took Shirley back to the barn this morning, she is acting like nothing happened! We are very lucky we found her when we did, this is her in the barn stall (with a heat lamp) she is the one in the middle. I'll leave her in the stall all day, after spending the night in the house I don't want her to cool down to fast. This evening then the door will be open so she will be back to roaming where she wants, but (hope) no more jumping in the water tank. :)

  1. Poor baby...I read on someone's blog that goats are born looking for a way to die! We raise them too. A few of ours have gotten their heads hung in places you would not have even thought and one of the kids has gotten stuck between two walls you wouldn't have thought they could do. Never a dull moment.

    1. Hi, I agree goats are fun to raise, always into something! So far the only thing (knock on wood) we have had trouble with them getting heads stuck in are the cow panels. The goats with horns, they can get their head into the panel, but not out! This usually means I have to cut the panel. :)

  2. So glad you found her when you did. Poor thing. But she looks good now. There really is never a dull moment on a farm.

  6. Ahhh, so glad your baby is going to be fine. I was wondering what happened. I love reading about your goats (especially when it's a happy ending like today!) We'll be getting some of our own, and it's nice to get a little info on them from other people. Have a restful evening tonight!

    1. I just read a bunch of your posts--everything from liquid soap to the road you saw each day of your life going to your home. You paint a beautiful picture of a beautiful, peaceful life. Sounds like you know where you want to be and are happy to be there. :) I really like your blog, thanks for sharing.

    2. Glad you will be getting some soon, they have a way of wrapping you! :) Thanks about the restful evening, after the night before I slept like a log! :D Thanks for reading my blog (and liking it) not always easy on a farm, but good out weighs the bad. Like carring bucketts of water up to the animals and splashing it on my pants, by the time I get home my pants are frozen! but the good is the look on the animnals faces when they see me! they are always happy to see me :)
