2 apple, 2 peach, 2 pear, 2 mulberry and in another area 2 grape vines, (we were lucky enough to have 2 existing grape vines) this will give us a good start. Yay!
It seemed to take forever to dig the holes (rocks, rocks and more rocks) :) After we dug the holes and planted the trees hubby cut the fence and added two metal fence posts on either side and wired the fence to the posts.
When we finished with the fence around the eight trees (to protect them from the goats)! Not that goats would get out of their areas and not only into the yard but into the fenced orchard, we also put the fence around each tree (for a while), never hurts to be over protected with Houdini's around. One important thing we have learned is to never ever underestimate goats! :) Anyway I thought except for giving each a gallon of water a day for a while, that was all I needed to do. Wait a few years and collect the fruit. :)
I should never ever think, it never works the way I think it will! Last night we were getting close to freezing so we had to cover the trees with sheets and then remove them this morning (with my daughters help). Now it again looks like we will have to cover them tonight, but hopefully it will not be for very many days and fingers crossed they do not get hurt with the cold weather.
We now have a big area that will just have grass (to mow) has anyone planted around fruit trees, not to close to the trees just between the rows? I was wondering if it would be okay to plant turnips or another root veggie? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Oh, good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I am sure I'll need it :)
DeleteYep...our goats are Houdini's too! They haven't escaped in a while but two days after we set up the beehives I found 3 of them in the field where the hives are. Luckily my bees aren't here yet or they may have had a rude awakening!
ReplyDeleteYour orchard is going to be a beautiful sight in a few years! Our pear trees are loaded. The peach trees are blooming so I am hoping for peaches this year. My grape vines are hopeless. I want to mow all of them down and start over!
Lucky you on your new bee's, I would love to get some! :) Do you can any fruit from your orchard? I hope the grapes we planted take off, the two we have were planted almost 60 years ago and they still produce really good. keeping fingers crossed!
DeleteI canned pears, made pear preserves and pear jam last year. Our tree finally produced enough. We only got a few peaches last year and we gobbled those down.. This is the second year for the peach trees so I remain hopeful for peach preserves and a hot buttered biscuit this year!
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Nothing tastes better to me than fresh buttered biscuits and peach preserves :D makes my mouth water thinking about it!!
ReplyDeleteI surely do pray it didn't get them last night..It got a lot of trees and tender vegetation here.. We had a big feeze..
ReplyDeleteIt was down to freezing last night here also, when I removed the sheets this morning the sheets were a little frozen. I was wishing I would have brought my gloves with me!

Good luck with your trees! I have been a little worries about the ones we got in the ground last fall, but luckily the temperatures did not dip too low.
ReplyDeleteWe were lucky with the tree's since we covered them every night, they look fine. The grape vines though got hit, so there will probably not be any grapes here this year.
