April and May
I have been trying to gentle down April and May since we got them two weeks ago, they were starting to come around.....then I had to give them their shots this morning. I think we are now back to square one! I am sorry to say they will not come within 5 foot of me now, so start all over we will....I hope it doesn't take as long this go around. They are so cute, I have said their names so much they both know them and they know what bucket belongs to who, April eats out of the red bucket and May has the blue. From what I have read they make good milk cows, they do not give as much milk as say a Jersey but for a small family farm that may be better. Because of this I want them happy and relaxed with me while they are still young. I also picked up two harnesses (to use when they are older....maybe) of course April's is red and May's is blue. They are both Dexter's, I am still in the process of learning about this breed I found a site American Dexter Cattle Association I found it interesting. I did decide to keep their horns though, they curve in and besides I did not want to traumatise them any worse than the shots did.

I've always wondered why small farmers didn't train their dairy cows to a yoke. I see someone is finally going to do it. You really DON'T need a harness, you know!

ReplyDeleteJennifer, I do make cheese with goats milk (soft)and conjeta (mexican caramel). I do have Carol the cow that I milk I guess I have not blogged about her yet, I make butter and a few soft cheese's with carol. Hard cheese I'm just not to sure about yet...maybe in the near future.
Gorges, with Carol the cow, I have her trained when I put on her halter she stands still where ever we are (even in the field. She lets me milk her, then when I'm done I take off the halter and give her her feed that way I dont have to put her in the milk stand (i'm not trapping her head). What is a yoke? Is that better to train April and May on?
